Monday Magic: Florida Water

Florida Water was first introduced in the United States in 1808. Sold in general stores and pharmacies, it was high praised for its many uses, from health to home fragrance, it was (and is) a very versatile product. Its strong magical properties have made it a staple in Hoodoo, Voodoo, Santeria and Wicca practices.

It is used in cleansing and purification rites of all kinds. It has also been used to help with depression, but can also help calm those who are overstimulated. It's been known to help attract lovers, clear the way for ancestral communication, removing obstacles, and blessings over homes and families.

Here's how to make your own:

5 parts alcohol (most people use vodka with a high alcohol content. Key: high alcohol content)

Choose at least two items from each group:

Aromatic greens:
4 parts fresh mint
4 parts fresh basil
4 parts fresh rosemary

3 parts rose petals (fresh)
3 parts jasmine (dried or fresh)
3 parts lavender (dried)

2 parts lemon peel
2 parts orange peel
2 parts lime peel

1 part allspice berries
1 part cinnamon sticks
1 part cloves

Put the vodka on low heat.  Add the dry ingredients and allow them to simmer for 5-10 minutes.  Add the remaining ingredients.  Simmer on low for an addition 40 minutes. Cool, pour into jar(s) with dark colored glass.
