Monday Musings: Blessings- are they, really?

I miss writing. So, I'm back at it again with Monday Musings. I'll try to keep them short, but no promises ;)

Today, I'm pondering the word, "Blessings."  It's definitely a religious word, and many use it, even in the Witching World. We all mean very kind and beneficial things when we say or write this, but, have you ever seen the etymology of this word?

Blessing:
Old English blēdsian, blētsian, based on blōd ‘blood’ (i.e., originally perhaps ‘mark or consecrate with blood’). The meaning was influenced by its being used to translate Latin benedicere ‘to praise, worship.

So, basically, we're talking about marking or consecrating something with blood, or blood worship. I'm not sure that's exactly what I want to convey to all of my lovely friends and family members.

Don't get me wrong. I have nothing against using one's own blood for personal magic. That's an individual, private act, and should be kept silent.

I'm just not sure I want to go around saying, "And, a very Blood Consecration to you, too!" While intention is so important, words mean things, and I believe we really need to look at our language, and what we're truly saying when we speak, or write.

I honestly don't know what alternative to use, yet, but I'm open to suggestions.

Thoughts?

Let me know here, in the comments, or on the Facebook page. I'm interested in getting your input on this.
